I visited the International Center for Photography on August 10, 2007 at 6:19. I know the exact time because my iPod with the attached mic date stamped the audio file it produced from walking around the museum with the recorder recording. If you live in the South you know this sound. It surrounds you. Something so loud. . . But impossible (i think) to photograph. This recording was made in my parents back yard in North Georgia.

so i've been inviting people all over the internet to take part in my dissertation project about lost and found photos. i post invitations on message boards, email people directly, and i've even placed ads on craig's list. i've had a steady stream of visitors. i've had 6 callers in about 7 weeks. i've also started doing short talks at libraries and retirement centers. got three great stories last week. will put them up soon.
last night i was getting some stuff xeroxed for a conference i'm going to in new york and the woman who was helping me remembered me from two years ago when i bought a digital recorder. she had been using a digital recorder to record her baby. i told her that i thought that was really great because so many people these days just rely on video or photos and that audio records a different aspect of life. anyway, i told her about this project and she had a story. she told me she'd call it in today. let's see if she does. she promised.
i've had quite a few people tell me they are going to call and then they don't. i knew this going in that setting up a voicemail (somewhat unique, but not really -- tv shows are telling viewers to call in their favorite moments and whatnot and then podcasting the calls) would take more of an effort by potential participants.
