My dissertation adviser sent me an article about Joe Manning about a year ago from the Daily Hampshire Gazette. This semester I'm teaching a course titled "Lost & Found Media." Joe has been reuniting ancestors of children featured in Lewis Hine photographs. He has found over 100 descendants.
I asked Joe to come talk to my class about his Lewis Hine project. He did. I took his photograph and we had this short conversation. You can read all about Joe's project and his other work (photography, poetry, writing) HERE.

Recently, the Chester, VA paper had an article about the Matoaca Cotton Mill. I grew up in Matoaca, and remember my Dad talking about working in the Mill when he was 12. I found on your web site a letter that Anthelia Holt Robinette of Matoaca had written when she worked in the mill. My family was kid to the Holts, so I took the article to my cousin Lucille Holt, who is 93, and she remembered Aunt Anthelia. I also found the name of my Grandmother Ida Johnson and an uncle Ollie Johnson listed as workers and showing the amount they made for 2 weeks work. Both of my parents (now deceased)grew up in Matoaca. My Dad would be 100 and my Mother 98. My mother was a Baugh and my Dad a Johnson. I look forward to finding more info about the Mill and the people that worked there. As I read over the list of names, I remember some of them from my childhood. I now live in Chester, Va which is not far from Matoaca. I will certainly get the books about the Holt Family and take them to my cousin. Shelby Johnson Bowles
