about this site

  • Hello. My name is Todd Wemmer. Here you will find a number of audio interviews and field recordings related to photography. I've also started doing a few non-audio posts. Text & Video. I found the slide photo above (taken by my father) during a recent visit with my parents. I asked my mom about it.

I use the H2 Zoom, iPod Belkin mic & iPod, and cell phone for recording. I used to use a Sharp minidisc (R.I.P).

I use music from MagnaTunes.com. Great site. Great music. Most of the songs I've used recently come from Joram. You can find him on Magnatunes.com.

Field Recording

But you've got another camera that works

I dropped the camera (below) in the ocean (at Good Harbor, Gloucester MA). I told my kids about it in the car afterwards and recorded it.  Since I've dropped it, I've been using the audio recorder when we go out.  More on this later.  I was able to rescue the memory card with the last photographs on it.  Little beach snapshots.

Sam be quiet, I'm going to record the ocean

This is an audio recording of my son and I at Castle Rock on Marblehead Neck.  I've taken him there many times. I have zillions of photographs. I don't think any image (or video for that matter) will bring back memories of going to Castle Rock like this audio recording will. The sounds of him throwing rocks... And I'm also playing with how to do some different field recording / experimental projects.  This recording also features Cricket Wilbur (geologist) telling me about the rocks from this beach.  She told me about the rocks. I then asked her to tell me again and to pretend I was in 3rd grade.  Photos below are a few I took at Castle Rock.

The Ground Zero Piper

This gentleman was playing "Amazing Grace" near Ground Zero.  His name is Philip Belpasso.  He has a website.  Visit it HERE.   A number of people have taken photographs of him. Here are some images of the Ground Zero piper by photographers on Flickr.   Below is the photograph I took of him. I also made a short audio recording of him playing the flute.

The Sounds of the Annie Leibovitz exhibit at the High Museum

This is a recording of the Annie Leibovitz exhibit at the High Museum on a busy day.  How to properly enjoy this recording: 1) Get out your favorite Leibovitz book.  Flip through the book at a leisurely pace.  2) Play this recording really loud. You might want to put on headphones.  3) When you hear the cell phone ring in the recording, give the closest person (or pet) a "what kind of insane person leaves  his/her cell phone on in a museum gallery."  [the owner of that cell phone picked it up and talked aloud] 4) When the closest person sees your look and asks "what's with that?" you say "Shhhhhhhh we're in a museum" and roll your eyes.

Peeler Man (Joe Ades) in NYC

While I was New York City this summer I saw this guy selling "magical peelers."  Everyone was taking photographs of him.  You can see a a number of Flickr photos HERE.   The New York Daily Photo blog wrote this short piece about him.  He was amazing to listen to. . . So I recorded him. Listen HERE

The Sounds of ICP

I visited the International Center for Photography on August 10, 2007 at 6:19.  I know the exact time because my iPod with the attached mic date stamped the audio file it produced from walking around the museum with the recorder recording. Suggestion: get your Stephen Shore book out (you know the one) and put your Bose headphones on and enjoy. . .  HEAR the sounds of ICP HERE Mic

Exhibits featured in this recording:
Stephen Shore
Amelia Earhart
African American Portraits
David Seymour

Bugs in the South (Georgia)

bug shell

If you live in the South you know this sound. It surrounds you.  Something so loud. . . But impossible (i think) to photograph.  This recording was made in my parents back yard in North Georgia.
