about this site

  • Hello. My name is Todd Wemmer. Here you will find a number of audio interviews and field recordings related to photography. I've also started doing a few non-audio posts. Text & Video. I found the slide photo above (taken by my father) during a recent visit with my parents. I asked my mom about it.

I use the H2 Zoom, iPod Belkin mic & iPod, and cell phone for recording. I used to use a Sharp minidisc (R.I.P).

I use music from MagnaTunes.com. Great site. Great music. Most of the songs I've used recently come from Joram. You can find him on Magnatunes.com.

Larry Volk: A Story of Roses, part 2

Volk2

Last Fall, I interviewed Larry Volk about his A Story of Roses project.  He told me about a trip he was taking to France to explore and document MORE for this project. I sent an audio recorder (the one in the picture) with him to record his thoughts.  I will be talking more about sending people audio recorders to people later. Here is the short interview I did with him before he left.

Recorder

(From our interview last Fall) This is a short conversation I had with photography professor Larry Volk (Endicott College) about his project,  "A Story of Roses."  I remember talking to Larry about this project when I started putting together my dissertation site and thinking this is ALL about lost (loss) and found (discovery). You can view "A Story of Roses" on his portfolio site: www.larryvolk.com. A quote about Larry's project from his site: "A Story of Roses" uses a digital process to combine historical family imagery, documents and text into a complex narrative, which explores the nature of identity."

The music on this recording is from Nine Inch Nails. (Track #9) The album: Ghosts I-IV has a Creative Commons License. So does their new album The Slip. Thanks Trent.

Joe Manning's Lewis Hine & FSA Project

Joe

My dissertation adviser sent me an article about Joe Manning about a year ago from the Daily Hampshire Gazette.   This semester I'm teaching a course titled "Lost & Found Media."  Joe has been reuniting ancestors of children featured in Lewis Hine photographs.  He has found over 100 descendants.

I asked Joe to come talk to my class about his Lewis Hine project. He did.  I took his photograph and we had this short conversation.   You can read all about Joe's project and his other work (photography, poetry, writing) HERE.
