I found the slide photo above (taken by my father) during a recent visit with my parents. I asked my mom about it.
Photos die, unless we talk about them. Hello. My name is Todd Wemmer. Photosdie.com features audio interviews and field recordings related to photography. I use the term "related" loosely. I might say that everything is about photography. Or photography is about everything. I might also say that this site is really more about the talk that surrounds photography. Or the sounds that surround photography. So I am interested in the talk that surrounds the photograph more than the actual photograph itself. Or something like that. Half journalistic / half qualitative research.
I use the H2 Zoom, iPod Belkin mic & iPod, and cell phone for recording. I used to use a Sharp minidisc (R.I.P).
In a park near our house there is a tank. Iryzk Park. The tank doesn't work (duh). It's just parked there. I guess kids can climb on it. We don't go there very often. The other day my son was near the tank and he heard baby birds. He investigated. We stuck the H2 Zoom near the nest that was wedged way back. Here is Sam talking a bit before the recording of the baby birds. If you are on an iPhone or iPad click HERE to listen.
I was walking to the Peabody Essex Museum this morning. A man was sitting in his pickup truck playing the harmonica. I asked if I could record him. He said "Yea. Blues on Sunday." Listen. What if I had asked him if I could take his photograph?
I did not know Cicero C. Simmon's work before I saw many of his images in the Atlanta airport (Terminal D think? I can't remember. You can see and buy prints of Simmons work HERE. You can read about the Atlanta Airport Art program HERE. I recorded audio from around the photographs. Here is where I should write a long, bloggish like post about public art. Just think about it for a few minutes. People waiting for flights. . . and then they learn about Cicero Simmons.
When I go to New York City (which isn't as much as I like) I try to walk as much as possible. A few weeks ag0 (the Wed. after inauguration) was very cold in NYC. Ended up in the subway more than usual. I had my audio recorder. I turned it on when I heard a man playing the saxaphone. The sounds of the subway covered up his playing. But then the subway left. And then a whole flock of school kids came by. All these sounds were recorded. After this little sound scene my friend saw that I was recording (I just had the little recorder in my hand by my side) and asked: "Did you record all that?"All that. Yes. The kids. The subway. The saxaphone. All that.
I'm sure someone is documenting with audio the sounds of New York City. I'm going to make a New York City category on the side for my recordings I've made in NYC.
